Every time I write a regional report on Alsace’s new vintage, I always get asked by numerous readers as well as wine lovers I get to meet in the field, so to speak, which grape variety performed best that year. Which is another way of asking what the year’s best wines were. You’d probably expect I answer with Riesling or another one of Alsace’s big three or four varieties; and in fact, some powers that be would probably hope as much.
