Announcing Ian D’agata’s New Book: “The Grapes and Wines of China”

Just launched ten days ago, Ian D’Agata’s new book covering the wines of China has already drawn praise from Chinese wine lovers and wineries.

At 226 pages long, “The Grapes And Wines Of China” is a brand-new book describing China’s burgeoning wine scene that is recognized as being the most complete and in-depth text on the subject. Meticulously researched and written over the course of three years after another three spent visiting, repeatedly different Chinese wine regions and wineries, “The Grapes And Wines Of China” represents the state-of-the-art analysis and take on the subject. Ian has lived in China since 2000, and began visiting the country regularly for wine-related work in 2010: this has allowed him to gain valuable insight and a thorough understanding of the complex Chinese wine history and present-day reality.

Ian D’Agata told us: “I am very grateful to China for how I have been received in my now seven years living in the country: people have been very generous and kind with their time and help, and this book is that much better thanks to everybody pitching in. I am extremely proud of what I’ve written and think the book will prove an invaluable aid not just to understanding Chinese wines better, but also for wineries to become better-known and hopefully sell their wines better”.

The book is equipped with maps showing the most important Chinese wine regions, andhas the most detailed chapter ever written on wine grapes in and of China, ranging from the better-known vinifera varieties to completely unknown rare Chinese native grapes that are being sued to give singularly good, Chinese wines. The book ends with the description of over fifty Chinese wineries worth knowing about and section on tasting notes and scores of about ninety recently released Chinese wines.

Written in a highly erudite but at the same time very engaging and humorous style typical of all of D’Agata’s works, this book is must add to all serious wine book collections and libraries. For all those studying at level 3 and diploma level wine courses, but also those wanting to become Master Somms and MWS, this book is the perfect, even necessary, companion to have in order to learn all there is to know on China’s wine today.

The hardcover English-language version is available at Amazon Books now (www.amazon.com). A Chinese  Mandarin language version will be available as a paperback from a Chinese publisher based in Shanghai in early November.
