Housed in a sixteenth century building in the heart of medieval and fairy tale-pretty Riquewihr in Alsace, the Maison Zimmer has been around for a very long time indeed. The caveau or cellar was opened around 1840, while the winstub Au Tire-Bouchon (aptly named, as it translates in English to the “corkscrew”) was launched in the early 1970s. The little bistro in pure Alsatian style has three rooms (the salle du vigneron or the room of the winegrower, the salle des trophées or the room of the trophies, and the outside courtyard), can sit up to 150 people and is blessed by a delightful outside garden area or courtyard where it is a pleasure to eat when the weather allows. The winstub offers classic Alsatian fare that is well-rendered: nothing that will have you thinking Michelin stars but that’s not the goal here. By contrast, this place offers a very solid cuisine that is no relative of tourist traps, of which there are a few in the charming little town.
