VOGELE IN BOLZANO

In all honesty, my latest winery trip to Bolzano was met with some fantastic wines and some not-so fantastic food. Bolzano is a remarkably pretty Alpine town in which it is a pleasure to walk and relax. However, much as it is in the Langhe, there are times of the year when it is far more interesting to go visit. In the Langhe it is truffle season, for example; and in Alto Adige, one of the best times to go is also in the fall. I visited Bolzano most recently at the beginning of September, but in fairness, at that time of year, the bounty of fall products that make this germanic-influenced cuisine more interesting were missing: it’s one thing to visit when all you can eat is endless variations of pork-based foodstuffs and dishes, and quite another to come when the restaurants and markets are teeming with mushrooms of all kinds, deer/venison meat and so much more.
