Magical Syrah Wines from Tensley in California

by Michele Gargani

I always look forward to tasting at Tensley Cellars, a benchmark producer of Syrah wines in California’s Central Coast. Founded by Joey Tensley in 1998, the winery has built a reputation for crafting some of the most expressive single-vineyard Syrah wines in the state. The style here masterfully balances richness with site-specific character, achieved through hands-off winemaking—native yeast fermentations, minimal intervention, and a deliberately short élevage of eight months. This approach preserves remarkable freshness and energy without sacrificing depth or aging potential.

Tensley’s portfolio ranges from serious, terroir-driven entry-level Syrah wines to distinctive whites like their standout Clairette Blanche, and elegant GSM blends. However, their single-vineyard Syrah releases remain the heart of the winery, offering a deep dive into the microclimates, soils, and exposures of Santa Barbara County. Few regions in the world are as well-suited to growing Syrah, and within Santa Barbara, each vineyard shows its own identity. Tensley’s precision and unwavering quality make it an essential reference point for anyone exploring California Syrah.
