L’Osteria della Unione is one of those historic wine area osterie that was there at the beginning of Barbaresco’s (and Barolo’s) rise to stardom. Back in the 1970s, the Langhe were living dark days and Dolcetto wines were much more sought after, and bought, than either Barbaresco or Barolo. When the modern-day renaissance of Italian wine finally began in the early to mid-1980s, thanks to the activity of a few enlightened individuals, the Osteria dell’Unione in Treiso (one of the four communes in the Barbaresco production area), founded in 1982 by Pina Bongiovanni and Beppe Marcarino, was at the forefront of all the initial blind tastings and presentations by producers who would quickly become stars. It is also the place where the seeds of the Slow Food movement were sown too.
