Nascetta is a semi-aromatic grape that is the only native white grape of the Langhe. It is essentially a one town grape, given that is has always grown in the countryside of the commune of Novello, better known as one of the only eleven communes allowed to make Barolo. Nascetta was always grown there; and though it was never too popular decades ago because of its irregular productivity (those were poverty-stricken days, very different from today) it was always part of Novello’s vineyards. Today, that problem has been fixed somewhat by reducing crop loads; and though it hasn’t been solved by any means, nowadays things could not be more different for Nascetta and its wine. Native grapes are in fashion, most everybody is sick and tired of Chardonnay and Sauvignon wines that taste more or less exactly the same independently of where they are made, and fresh, flavourful, unoaked wines are all the rage. And so… enter Nascetta.
