WINE ACADEMY TEXTBOOKS

Native Wine Grapes of Italy  (by Ian D’Agata)

Winner of the 2014 Louis Roederer Wine Book of the Year award, Native Wine Grapes of Italy (NWGI) is generally considered to be not just the bible of Italian grapes and wines but one of the best wine books ever written. It details with precision and scientific rigor found nowhere else all you need to know on Italy’s myriad native grapes, with carefully revised and documented historical references on the grapes (the bane of practically all wine web sites that report much erroneous, anecdotal, information on this subject), their exact origins, meanings of their names and parentages.

Italy’s Wine Grape Terroirs    (by Ian D’Agata)

An even more academic and scientific-level book, Ian’s follow-up to NWGI is a tome detailing the terroirs single grape varieties are associated with to a degree that has never been attempted to before or after. Grape varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano, Nebbiolo, Ribolla Gialla, Forastera, Pecorino, Sangiovese and Verdicchio, and many others, have the terroirs and wines they have been associated with over the centuries analyzed in great detail. For example, whereas we speak generically of a Ribolla Gialla wine, this book details with precision the differences between the terroirs of Buttrio, Dolegna, Oslavia, and Rosazzo, for example, and it follows, the different Ribolla Gialla wines that are made there. That’s same in-depth, scientific- and research-rich approach is taken with all the other grape varieties included in the book.
